its so sad that there are only like a thousand samaritans left, when there used to be millions. its kind of stunning when you think that if not for judaism becoming a portable religion separate from the temple cult, there would only be a thousand jews left clinging to the ruins of their second temple in Jerusalem...

Also, Israelis don't really treat Samaritans well. They're considered to be "arabs" by the army. Some of the prisoners exchanged last year were Samaritans from Nablus being traded for Israelis.

@technicallydifficult thats so weird Samaritans are closer to jews than they are to arabs even though they speak Arabic... just another way israel is a disappointment to the jew fandom.

I mean, Samaritans are very extra non-diasporic. They literally carry the largely unchanged version of Judaism from before the Babylonian Conquest. And they have the oldest Torah Scroll, from 600 BCE.

Muslims also sacrifice animals, so I'm nonplused. In fact, muslims are only supposed to consume farm animals if they have been sacrificed through the zabah ritual. If you have seen the words "zahibah halal" on packages, it means the meat was sacrifical. An animal which was set aside for an important sacrifice (for example, for blessing a newborn or for eid al adha) is called a qurban. And there are long prayers for qurbani, but for general purpose, say, just for the sake of food, before cutting it, you point it towards Makkah and say "Bismillah wa Allahu Akbar" and cut it, and bury the blood so nobody steps on it, because it is sacred.
